A mixed congregation of more than 2,000 Natal Africans, Indians and Europeans heard Dr. Ramsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury, preach at the City Hall of Durban on Sunday (22 November). Dr. Ramsey is on a three-week tour of south Africa.
Dr. Ramsey preached a sermon after 20 ministers, Indians, Africans and whites, had conducted the communion ceremony, without any racial divisions. The 90-minute service was held in the English and Zulu languages.
The 66-year-old primate repeated his call for togetherness during the sermon. Although after the service every body would go back to their own parishes, he told the congregation, today's service would not be quickly forgotten.
It was one of the biggest communion services ever held in Durban, with the 2,500 seats of the Hall filled well before the start.
