  • Description

THOUSANDS OF DEMONSTRATORS PARADED THROUGH THE STREETS OF LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY) IN A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST THE VIETNAM CONFLICT AND CALLING FOR BRITAIN TO DISSOCIATE ITSELF FROM THE CONFLICT. INCIDENTS WERE FEW, AND THE ORGANISERS - THE YOUTH CAMPAIGN FOR NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT - CLAIMED THE DEMONSTRATION A COMPLETE SUCCESS.

AT THE HEIGHT OF THE DEMONSTRATION SOME 5,000 PEOPLE WERE MILLING AROUND WHITEHALL AT THE TOP OF DOWNING STREET, AND SIX PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED IN SCUFFLES WITH THE POLICE.

ACTRESS VANESSA REDGRAVE SPOKE AT THE RALLY IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE BEFORE THE DEMONSTRATORS MOVED ON DOWN WHITEHALL TO DOWNING STREET WHERE THEY HANDED IN PROTEST LETTERS AT THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER.

MISS REDGRAVE WAS ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER OF DEMONSTRATORS ALLOWED INTO DOWNING STREET TO HAND IN LETTERS. THE ORGANISERS CLAIM THAT MORE THAN 2,000 WERE HANDED IN TO THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE.

AFTER HANDING IN THE LETTERS, MISS REDGRAVE AND AN AMERICAN FOLK-SINGER SANG PROTEST SONGS OUTSIDE No. 10.

THE DEMONSTRATORS DISBURSED AS RAIN STARTED TO FALL.
