  • Description

At the royal palace in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya's capital, the body of the late Paramount Ruler, His Majesty Tuarku Sir Abdul Rahman, lay in state April 2, the day following his death at the age 64.

Among the many who came to pay the last their last respects were members of the royal family, Sultans of the Malayan states - including the Sultan of Selangor who is acting as Deputy Paramount Ruler - Cabinet ministers and the diplomatic corps.

April 3 the coffin was placed on a gun carriage drawn by 50 naval ratings, and to the solemn beat of Army drums the funeral cortege made its way to the railway station. From there the Ruler's body was taken to his home at Seremban, 40 miles away, where the burial took place. Among the principal mourners accompanying the funeral procession were Singapore's Head of State, and Singapore Premier Mr. Lee Kuan Yew.

Under Malaya's 1957 Constitution, a Paramount Ruler is chosen every 5 years, and the late Paramount Ruler was sworn in at the time Britain gave Malaya full independence.
