KHE SANH IS NO LONGER A BASTION, BUT ANOTHER U.S. BASE IN SOUTH VIETNAM. AFTER?

  • Description

KHE SANH IS NO LONGER A BASTION, BUT ANOTHER U.S. BASE IN SOUTH VIETNAM. AFTER NEARLY TWO AND A HALF MONTHS THE 6,000 AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS THERE HAVE BEEN RELIEVED AND NEW FRESH UNITS ARE CONFRONTING THE VIET CONG. ALTHOUGH SUBJECTED TO OCCASIONAL ATTACKS THE REPLACEMENT TROOPS ARE MOVING OUT OF THE BASE ON SEARCH AND DESTROY MISSIONS. THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE SIEGE HAS CONE, BUT THE DEBRIS OF THE FIGHTING REMAINS.

THE WRECKED AIRCRAFT, VEHICLES AND BUILDINGS AROUND THE CAMP TELL THEIR OWN STORY OF THE VIET CONG'S SUCCESS IN PINNING DOWN THE AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS INSIDE THE BASE. AT THE HEIGHT OF THE BATTLE, WHICH WAS LIKENED TO DIEN BIEN PHU, TWO PURPLE HEARTS WERE OFTEN AWARDED IN A WEEK. ONE YOUNG MARINE EXPRESSED THE FEELINGS OF MANY OTHERS WHEN HE SAID A MONTH IN KHE SANH WAS LIKE A FOUR-YEAR HITCH IN HELL.

NOW KHE SANH HAS LOST ITS SIGNIFICANCE IN THE VIETNAM WAR BUT THOSE 6,000 MEN THAT LIVED THROUGH THE SIEGE WON'T FORGET THOSE VITAL TEN WEEKS WHEN THEY ENDURED ONE OF THE BIGGEST VIET CONG ASSAULTS OF THE WAR.
