  • Description

Archbishop Makarios, deposed President of Cyprus, pointedly accused Greece of staging the Cyprus coup that overthrew him last Monday. Speaking before the United Nations Security Council yesterday (July 19), the Archbishop appealed to the 15-nation council to intervene to preserve the independence of Cyprus.

The Security Council received Archbishop Makarios as a head of state, and all the members rose to their feet as he was escorted into the chamber.

In a speech lasting nearly half an hour, the Archbishop described the coup as an "invasion" engineered by the Greek officers of the Cyprus National Guard. He added that many people had died during fighting, but gave no figures.

He stressed that the coup affected all Cyprus people, both in the Greek and Turkish communities, and seemed to hint strongly that it could trigger off Turkish retaliation:
