  • Description

THE ASSASSINATION OF THE CHAIRMAN OF JAPAN'S SOCIALIST OPPOSITION PARTY -- INEJIRO ASANUMA -- ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, TOUCHED OFF A SERIES OF MOB DEMONSTRATIONS WHICH FOLLOWED THE PATTERN OF THE COMMUNIST INSPIRED RIOTS EARLIER IN THE YEAR AGAINST THE UNITED STATES JAPAN SECURITY TREATY.

ASANUMA WAS FATALLY STABBED BY AN ULTRANATIONALIST YOUTH WHILE HE WAS ADDRESSING A RALLY ORGANISED BY JAPAN'S RULING LIBERAL-DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE TWO OPPOSITION PARTIES -- THE SOCIALISTS AND THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST PARTY.

FRESH DEMONSTRATIONS BEGAN YESTERDAY, OCTOBER 13, WHEN THE JAPANESE STUDENTS' LEAGUE MOVED AGAINST THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF THE PREMIER -- MR. IKEDA -- THE STUDENTS ALSO DEMONSTRATED AGAINST THE TOKYO METROPOLITAN POLICE WHO HAVE BEEN SEVERELY CRITICISED FOR THEIR FAILURE TO PROTECT ASANUMA ON WEDNESDAY.

A LARGE FORCE OF POLICE WAS CALLED OUT TO GUARD THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE AGAINST THE THOUSANDS OF ZENGAKUREN STUDENT MEMBERS WHO TRIED TO GAIN ENTRANCE. PROMINENT AMONG THE PLACARDS AND BANNERS CARRIED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE ENLARGED PHOTOS OF ASANUMA.

A LARGE FORCE OF POLICE WAS ALSO CALLED OUT TO GUARD THE HIBAYA NEW MUSIC HALL WHERE THE STABBING TOOK PLACE. AS THEY SURGED AGAINST THE POLICE, THE STUDENTS SHOUTED "DOWN WITH THE IKEDA CABINET" AND LET ASANUMA LIVE AGAIN."
A COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER EQUIPPED WITH A LOUD HAILER FOUND A FORUM ON THE STEPS OF THE HALL TO TELL THE STUDENTS THAT JAPAN WAS IN A CRITICAL CONDITION BECAUSE RIGHT WINGERS MIGHT ASSASSINATE OTHER SOCIALIST OR COMMUNIST LEADERS. HIS ADDRESS WAS FOLLOWED BY THE SINGING OF THE INTERNATIONALLE. THE DEMONSTRATIONS AND RIOTS CONTINUED INTO THE NIGHT WHEN TRADE UNIONISTS JOINED THE MILITANT STUDENTS.

THE MOVEMENT OF MOBS TOOK THE NOW FAMILIAR PATTERN IN JAPAN OF "SNAKE DANCING" FROM POINT TO POINT TO DISRUPT TRAFFIC AND FORCE A WAY THROUGH POLICE CORDONS.

IN THE EVENING PREMIER IDEKA AND THE METROPOLITAN POLICE WERE ONCE AGAIN THE TARGET OF THE DEMONSTRATORS PLACARDS AND SLOGANS AND VIOLENCE BROKE OUT AS THE CROWDS FORCED THEIR WAY TOWARDS THE DIET (PARLIAMENT) BUILDING.
