  • Description

There was an eclipse of the moon over Western Europe on Tuesday night (18 November).

It was a full eclipse with the earth's shadow completely covering the moon as seen from Britain.

The eclipse of the moon was caused by the earth coming between the sun and the moon casting a shadow across the lunar body.

SYNOPSIS: The eclipse of the moon....a phenomenon that, in ancient times, was the cause for prayer, worship, occult practices and fear.

Although modern science has provided logical explanations for the eclipse the event still drawn people to their windows, and from the warm interiors of their homes they gaze with atavistic awe at the apparent mystical disappearance of the earth's closest companion. The icy cold clear skies over London, the capital of England, provided a fine vantage point to view the eclipse.

A lunar eclipse is caused by the earth coming between the sun and the moon throwing a dark shadow across the surface of the lunar body causing the illusion that the moon is actually "disappearing". But despite such a reassuring scientific explanation the occasion of an eclipse still seems to invoke feelings of wonder in many a modern educated mind.
