  • Description

Japan's experienced international ski jumpers fared badly at the 17th NHK cup 90 metre ski jump meeting in Sapporo, Japan, on Thursday (15 January).

Veteran Hiroshi Itagaki and university student Takao Ito who have both been chosen for the 1976 winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria disappointingly tied for fourth place - and the event was won by an unknown jumper Shigeru Kaneko. Kaneko scored jumps of 99.5 metres (about 300 feet) and 101 metres (about 305 feet) at the Okurayama jump hill site that was used for the 1972 Olympics.

Second place went to Sakae Tsuruga and Manabu Ono took third place. Yukio Kasaya, another team member and winner of the 1972 Olympic 70 metre jump came sixth. So the event which was meant to provide one of the final chances for team members to prove themselves in fact did nothing to boost Japanese hopes of a ski jumping success at Innsbruck next month.

SYNOPSIS: Japan's international ski jumpers had one of their last chances to prove themselves in competition on Thursday before next month's Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria. The event was the seventeenth NHK ninety metre ski jump at the Okurayma ski jump slope where the Winter Olympus were held at Sapporo, Japan, in nineteen-seventy-two. University student Takao Ito had already been picked for the team but he was unable to get the two hundred metre jumps needed to take the championships.

Veteran Hiroshi Itagaki, another team member - but the total distance of his two best jumps was no better than Takao Ito's and the two internationals finished a disappointing fourth equal.

Yukio Kasaya, another team member and winner of the nineteen-seventy-two Olympic seventy metre jump. finished sixth. The winner - here signing autographs - was a virtual unknown Shigeru Kaneko, who scored jumps of ninety-nine point five metres and a hundred and one metres. A good day for Kaneko but a day which did little to boost Japanese hopes for Innsbruck.
