    THE U.S. AIR FORCE SPECIAL AIR WARFARE CENTRE AT HURLBURT FIELD, FLORIDA, ACCEPTED THE FIRST OF A NEW TYPE OF FORWARD AIR CONTROLLER AIRCRAFT - A FRONT-LINE FIRE-POWDER DIRECTOR WHICH WILL SOON GO INTO SERVICE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA.

    THE AIRCRAFT IS THE OV-IOA, NICKNAMED "BRONCO" AND IS A TWIN-ENGINED, SHORT TAKE-OFF AND LANDING AIRCRAFT WITH TREMENDOUS MANOEUVRABILITY.

    THE FIRST OF THESE AIRCRAFT WAS DELIVERED ON MONDAY, WHEN IT WAS FLOWN TO THE SPECIAL AIR WARFARE CENTRE FROM THE FACTORY IN PORT COLUMBUS, OHIO, BY THE COMMANDER OF SAWC, MAJOR-GENERAL THOMAS G. CORBIN.

    ACCORDING TO THE COMMENTARY WITH THIS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE FILM THE AIRCRAFT IS INTENDED FOR THE USE OF FORWARD AIR CONTROLLER - THE PILOTS WHOSE JOB IT IS TO DIRECT ARTILLERY AND AIRCRAFT FIREPOWER ON TO GROUND TARGETS. THE OV-IOA IS IDEALLY SUITED TO THIS WORK, BEING A RUGGED MACHINE ABLE TO LOITER IN THE AIR AT LOW SPEED, AND ALSO TO BE OPERATED FROM SMALL, ROUGH AIRSTRIPS.

    FURTHERMORE, THE "BRONCO" HAS CONSIDERABLE FIREPOWER OF ITS OWN, BEING EQUIPPED WITH FOUR M-60 MACHINE GUNS, ROCKETS AND BOMBS.

    THE OV-IOA WILL REPLACE THE O-A "BIRDDOG" FAC AIRCRAFT AT PRESENT IN USE IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA.
