  • Description

IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF TAY NINH CITY, NEAR THE CAMBODIAN FRONTIER, VIETNAMESE AIRBORNE FORCES HAVE ESTABLISHED AN OUTPOST -- NAMED LE LOI -- WHICH IS DESIGNED TO INVITE THE VIET CONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE ARMY TO ATTACK AND REVEAL THEIR PRESENCE. THE MEN IN THE OUTPOST CAN CALL ON ARTILLERY AND AIR SUPPORT.

MEANWHILE, ABOUT FOUR MILES EAST OF THE OUTPOST, SOUTH VIETNAMESE MARINES HARRY THE ENEMY, KEEPING THEM ON THE MOVE, INFLICTING CASUALTIES AND TAKING PRISONERS.

THE TAY NINH PROVINCE HAS RECENTLY BEEN THE SCENE OF HEAVY FIGHTING. THIS IS LARGELY BECAUSE THE PROVINCE BORDERS ON CAMBODIA WHICH ACTS AS A REFUGE AND SANCTUARY FOR VIET CONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE FORCES, BUT ALSO BECAUSE SPECIAL PRESTIGE ATTACHES TO TAY NINH CITY (A LITTLE OVER 50 MILES FROM SAIGON), WHICH IS A HOLY PLACE FOR THE TWO MILLION ADHERENTS OF THE CAO-DAI SECT IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE "BAIT" OUTPOST OF LE LOI IS IN A COMPLETELY OPEN AREA ABOUT 10 MILES SOUTH-WEST OF TAY NINH CITY AND IS SURROUNDED BY ENEMY TERRITORY ON ALL SIDES. 500 OR MORE TRIP FLARES SET UP ALONG THE PERIMETER WIRE ARE CHECKED DAILY BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER, CAPTAIN TUYEN. THE CAMBODIAN BORDER, FROM WHICH ANY ATTACK IS LIKELY TO COME, IS KEPT UNDER CONSTANT OBSERVATION BY GUARDS IN LOOKOUT POSITIONS. SEVERAL TIMES DURING EACH 24-HOUR PERIOD, THE OUTPOST'S TWO 105MM HOWITZER ARTILLERY PIECES BOMBARD SUSPECTED ENEMY POSITIONS.

THE AIRBORNE AND MARINE TROOPS, FROM WHICH THE LE LOI DETACHMENT AND SUPPORTING TROOPS ARE DRAWN, ARE THE MOST EXPERIENCED SOLDIERS IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THEY WILL BEAR A GREAT PART OF THE INCREASED RESPONSIBILITY WHICH IS TO DEVOLVE FROM THE U.S. TO THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES. THE FIRST CONTINGENT OF U.S. TROOPS IS DUE TO LEAVE ON 8 JULY.
