  • Description

VISNEWS May 25 filmed, King Hussein taking the salute at a big military parade held at Khaw, about 17 miles from Amman, to celebrate Jordan's 13th anniversary of independence.

Crown Prince Mohammed of Jordan; Sir Hugh Foot, Governor of Cyprus; military delegations from several countries, and huge crowds of spectators watched as detachments of guns tanks and lumbering camels, paraded past the royal dais in a dust-clouded procession.

In a speech afterwards King Hussein warned Communists that he stood as their foe, and would fight to preserve Arab traditions and build Jordanian prosperity. He said that the late King Faisal of Iraq, his cousin, who attended last year's independence parade in Jordan shortly before his assassination, died for similar aims.

The parade took place shortly after the arrest of Major General ASadik Sherar, Chief of Staff of Jordan's Army; a demonstration by members of the Army Engineer Corps - involving the blowing up of an arms dump near the Israeli border - in protest against the arrest of their Commanding Officer; rumours of further arrests of senior officials, and increased tension in Jordan.
