    President Nixon's historic trip to Peking began with a farewell address on the south lawn of the White House on Thursday (february 17).

    On and to wish the President goodbye were members of his family, the vice president, members of the Nixon cabinet, military and congressional leaders. In addition, there were cheers from several hundred children who had arrived t the White House especially for the occasion.

    After a brief address in which the President stressed the peaceful nature of his mission to the People's Republic of China, he boarded a waiting helicopter which took him to Andrews Air Force Base, just outside Washington. There the President, his advisors and Mrs. Nixon boarded the presidential jet...Air force One....and began the first leg of the log journey of China. He'll arrive in Peking on Monday (February 21)
