    FASHION STUDENTS FROM EIGHT EUROPEAN COUNTRIES MET IN ST. GALL, SWITZERLAND, ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD, TO COMPETE IN THE 10TH INTERNATIONAL YOUNG FASHION DESIGN CONTEST. SIXTY DESIGN WERE PRESENTED BY TEN COLLEGES AND BRITAIN'S KINGSTON COLLEGE WON THE CONTEST BY TAKING FIRST PRIZE IN FOUR OF THE SIX CATEGORIES.

    CATEGORIES WERE VACATIONS, DISCOTHEQUE, BEACH, WEDDING, CHAMPS ELYSEES AND GRAND GALA -- THE LAST OF WHICH HAD A STRIKING PRESENTATION IN METALLIC GUIPURE BY BRUSSELS' BISCHOFFSHEIM SCHOOLS.

    AMONG THE VACATION FASHIONS WERE A "HIS-AND-HERS" SAFARI OUTFIT IN TAN GARBARDINE -- WORN OVER MATCHING PRINTED COTTON SHIRTS WITH VERY ORIGINAL FRONT CUTS -- PRESENTED BY ARNHEM'S ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS. IN THE SAME CATEGORY, HANOVER'S SCHOOL OF ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOWED A WHITE COTTON VIOLE OUTFIT WITH FLORAL MOTIF.

    BEACH WEAR HAD 10 MODELS -- OF WHICH TWO OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING WERE A STRIKINGLY - SIMPLE WHITE-AND-YELLOW DRESS WITH A CAPE WHICH COVERS THE HEAD UNDER A STRAW HAD, BY BERLIN'S STATE ACADEMY OF ARTS AND CRAFTS AND FASHION. AND THE PRIZE-WINNING TROUSER-SUIT IN MULTI-COLOURED GUIPURE MADE UP ROW OVER ROW, WITH A MATCHING REVERSIBLE CAPE AND ORANGE TURBAN -- FROM KINGSTON.

    ZURICH'S STATE SCHOOL OF COMMERCIAL ART APPEARED IN THE DISCOTHEQUE CLASS WITH AN INTERESTING COMBINATION OF LEATHER, GOLD PAILLETTE INSERTS AND BELTED GOLD BLOUSE AND SHORTS. ALSO FOR "WITH-IT" NIGHT-LIFE, LONDON'S HORNSEY COLLEGE OF ART PRODUCED AN OUTFIT IN NAVY ORGANZA -- WITH A FLOATING CAPE AND A HEART-SHAPED BODICE.

    BUT IT WAS BRITAIN'S SECOND ENTRANT, THE KINGSTON COLLEGE OF ART, WHO WALKED AWAY WITH THE LAURELS IN A VERY TOUGH COMPETITION -- WINNING FOUR THE SIX CATEGORIES. THEIR WEDDING DRESS, FOR INSTANCE, A WHITE-BRIMMED HEAD-DRESS WORN ATOP A VEIL AND TRAIN IN WHITE SILK EMBROIDERED ORGANZA. THE PRIZES WERE RECEIVED FOR KINGSTON BY THEIR HEAD OF FASHION DESIGN, DAPHNE BROOKER.

    THE INTERNATIONAL PANEL OF SEVEN JUDGES WAS MADE UP OF A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SWISS FASHION INDUSTRY, TWO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE READY-TO-WEAR INDUSTRY, TWO FASHION JOURNALISTS, AND TWO HAUTE COUTURE DESIGNERS -- PROMINENT AMONG WHOM WAS MARG BOHAN OF PARIS' HOUSE DIOR.

    EACH SCHOOL IS GIVEN IDENTICAL FABRICS AND EMBROIDERIES TO WORK FROM -- ALTHOUGH THEY DO HAVE A CHOICE OF COLOUR VARIANTS -- AND THE STUDENTS HAVE TO DESIGN AND MAKE THE GIVEN SUBJECTS THEMSELVES.

    THE CONTEST IN ORGANISED BY THE PUBLICITY CENTRE FOR SWISS FABRICS AND EMBROIDERIES, AND IS SPONSORED BY THE SWISS TEXTILE INDUSTRY.
