  • Description

CELEBRATIONS MARKING THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALLIED RAID ON DIEPPE IN 1942 ARE BEING HELD IN FRANCE THIS WEEK-END. COMMEMORATION BEGAN ON SATURDAY, THE EVE OF THE ANNIVERSARY, WITH THE UNVEILING OF A MEMORIAL TO THE FUSILIERS OF MONTREAL WHO TOOK PART IN THE RAID.

BRITISH AND CANADIAN SURVIVORS OF THE ACTION WERE AMONG VETERANS AND OFFICIALS GATHERING NEAR DIEPPE BEACH FOR THE UNVEILING CEREMONY. AMIDST AN ARRAY OF REGIMENTAL COLOURS, THE MAYOR OF DIEPPE PAID TRIBUTE TO THE MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES 20 YEARS AGO.

MAJOR GUY LECHASSEUR, REPRESENTING THE QUEBEC GOVERNMENT, PULLED DOWN THE SHROUD, REVEALING THE INSCRIPTION: "TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO, HAVING COME FROM CANADA, SHED THEIR BLOOD ON FRENCH SOIL WHILE FIGHTING UNDER THE COLOURS OF A FRENCH-CANADIAN REGIMENT - THE FUSILIERS OF MONTREAL". PRAYERS WERE SAID BY COLONEL MONSEIGNEUR CHARLES BEAUNDRY, FORMER CHAPLAIN OF THE MONTREAL FUSILIERS, NOW CHAPLAIN-GENERAL OF THE CANADIAN ARMY.

A PIPER OF THE BLACK WATCH OF CANADA SOUNDED THE LAST POST, AND MANY WREATHS WERE LAID ON THE STEPS OF THE MEMORIAL BY CANADIAN AND FRENCH OFFICIALS. THEN CROWDS GATHERED AT THE BEACH, WHERE THE DARING BUT FATEFUL RAID HAD PAVED THE WAY FOR THE ALLIED D-DAY LANDINGS OF JUNE 1944.

(THE ALLIED OPERATION RAN INTO TROUBLE WHEN PART OF THE LANDING FORCE WAS INVOLVED IN AN UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER WITH A GERMAN COASTAL CONVOY. IN THE ENTIRE NINE-HOUR ACTION, ABOUT 2,500 OF A TOTAL RAIDING FORCE OF OVER 4,000 WERE KILLED, WOUNDED OR CAPTURED.)
