Background: Israeli and Syrian forces clashed in the Golan Heights area again on Friday (26 June) as the heaviest fighting along the Syrian border since the six-day war in 1967 continued.
The three days of fighting started on Wednesday with a tank and artillery duel that began with Syrian armoured and mechanised units crossing the ceasefire line for the first time since the June War.
By the end of Wednesday the Syrians claimed to have killed or wounded more than 200 Israelis and suffered over 100 casualties themselves.
Damascus claimed that in the air battles over Southern Syria seven Israeli aircraft had been shot down Syria also alleged that Israeli jets had fired a rocket at a civilian Alitalia jet airliner but this was denied by Israeli military authorities.
The fighting comes at the same time as the major United States diplomatic offensive to bring peace to the Middle East.
