  • Description

No sooner had the South Vietnamese forces withdrawn from Laos than the North Vietnamese launched a major drive against the Royal Laotian capital of Luang Prabang. With attacking forces within a couple of miles of the city, the government imposed martial law and rushed in reinforcement and artillery from as far as 250 miles away.

Prime object was to save the vital airfield to the north of the city, from which Laotian fighters fly daily combat missions against targets in the north of the country.

As an estimated 2,000 North Vietnamese closed in on Luang Prabang, refugees from outlying areas poured into the city in an effort to avoid the fighting.
