  • Description

The struggle of the giants for the Governorship of New York ended in an overwhelming victory for multi-millionaire Nelson Rockefeller. He ousted Averil Harriman.

Preliminary estimates put Rockefeller's majority at "about 1/2 million". For the Republican Party this was its only solace, its only ray of sunshine after a day of defeats. For the third successive time, its leader, President Eisenhower, is in opposition to the ruling party, the Democrats.

At Rockefeller's headquarters in the Commodore Hotel, everyone was shaking hands with everyone else. Party workers congratulated each other, and the man with the legendry name, Rockefeller, raised his arms in victory salute, like a boxer after winning a world title. Shouts of "Rockefeller for President!" were heard also.

But what a fight. Both candidates toured New York, meeting their constituents, being mobbed and apparently enjoying every moment of it.

With two results yet to be announced, the Democrats' gains in the House of Representatives amount to 48. In the Senate they snatched a further thirteen from the Republicans.

The next elections will be in 1960, and President Eisenhower has called on all Republicans to start campaigning for victory now.
