  • Description

FEDERAL NIGERIAN AUTHORITIES HAVE CLAIMED THAT ALL OF NIGERIA'S MID-WESTERN REGION IS UNDER THE CONTROL OF FEDERAL FORCES FOLLOWING THE CAPTURE OF ASABA, A STRATEGIC CENTRE ON THE NIGER RIVER.

THE TAKING OF ASABA BY FEDERAL FORCES COMES ONLY TWO WEEKS AFTER THE FALL OF THE MID-WEST CAPITAL BENIN TO FEDERAL TROOPS.

ASABA IS EIGHTY MILES (128 K.M.) EAST OF BENIN AND SIXTY MILES (96 K.M.) WEST OF ENUGU, CAPITAL OF THE SECESSIONIST EASTERN REGION.

THE FEDERAL FORCES NOW CONTROL THE ONITSHZ BRIDGE, LINKING THE MID-WESTERN REGION AND THE EASTERN REGION OVER THE RIVER NIGER.

ASABA WAS CAPTURED ON SATURDAY, AND FEDERAL FORCES HAVE BEEN SHELLING THE TOWN OF ONITSHA. FUEL STORAGE TANKS IN THE TOWN ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN HIT.
