    In the small town of Blitar, East Java, the kinsfolk of former President Sukarno on monday (June 22) mourned him as a national hero.

    Thousands of Indonesians trudged in from neighbouring villages to Sukarno's birthplace to see the country's army rulers who stripped him to power accord the father of Indonesia's independence the pomp of a sate funeral.

    The coffin, which was flown earlier in the day from Djakarta in an air force hercules, was draped in the national colours of red and white. An honour guard fired in farewell salvo, and the Deputy Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, General Maraden Panga Bean, who represented President Suharto, read the final oration. All this pointed to a [posthumous restoration of Sukarno's place in Indonesian history.

    As he had lain dying in Djakarta's Army hospital on Sunday morning the 69 year-old "president for Life" was still under surveillance for alleged complicity in the communist revolt of 1965.

    At the graveside, his Japanese third wife, Ratna Sari Dewi, their three year old daughter Kartika, Sukarno's sister, and his first five children wept openly as the coffin was lowered into its hero's grave. Sukarno met Kartika for the fist time of his death bed.

    President Sukarno died after being admitted to hospital with a kidney ailment and high blood pressure.
