  • Description

TEBEDU AREA...ABOUT SIXTY MILES SOUTH-WEST OF KUCHING, THE CAPITAL OF SARAWAK, WHERE BANDITS HAVE MADE THREE ATTACKS IN RECENT WEEKS.THE INDONESIAN BORDER IS THREE MILES AWAY ALONG A JUNGLE TRACK.

THE TEBEDU POLICE STATION WAS THE MAIN TARGET OF THE FIRST ATTACK.IT IS NOW MANNED BY ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS WHO HAVE ERECTED BARBED WIRE ENTANGLEMENTS AND OBSTACLES AROUND IT.

BEYOND THE WIRE - THE JUNGLE.THIS IS BEING PATROLLED CONSTANTLY IN DAYLIGHT HOURS BY THE MARINES.AFTER DUSK THERE IS A CURFEW UNTIL DAWN.

MOVEMENT BY THE MARINES IS MOSTLY ON FOOT AS THE JUNGLE ROADS ARE ALMOST IMPASSABLE FOR VEHICLES.ONE LAND ROVER CREW DISCOVERED THIS WHEN THE VEHICLE BECAME BOGGED DOWN.

PATROL ACTIVITIES ARE HAMPERED BY THE COMINGS AND GOING ACROSS THE BORDER OF PEASANT FARMERS AND VILLAGERS WHO FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS HAVE CARRIED ON THEIR BARTER TRADE.BUT TRADE IS MORE DIFFICULT NOW IN TEBEDU VILLAGE BECAUSE MOST OF THE SHOP-KEEPERS HAVE CLOSED THEIR SHOPS UNTIL THE SITUATION BECOMES MORE SETTLED.

THE BANDITS IN ONE RECENT RAID LEFT BEHIND A LETTER SAYING THEY BELONG TO THE NORTH KALIMANTAN LIBERATION ARMY - THE BRUNEI INSURGENT ORGANISATION.BUT THE GOVERNMENT OF SARAWAK BELIEVES THE ATTACKS WERE ORDERED BY THE CLANDESTINE COMMUNIST ORGANISATION (CCO).
