  • Description

In Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the 11th meeting of the Board of Directors of the African Computer Institute took place recently.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was opened by the Ivory Coast Budget Minister. Monsieur Abdoulaye Kone. After welcoming the delegates, Monsieur Kone said that for some time Ivory Coast politicians had considered computers as indispensable to the economic development of the country and that this development could only take place with strict control over public funds. Monsieur Kone added that in 1962 the Ivory Coast had only one computer unit, but that by 1976 there were 60. He also pointed out that such a development was not without its problems.

At the suggestion of the Ambassador to the Ivory Coast from the Central African Republic, Monsieur Layrodama, representing the Central African Republic Finance Minister, Monsieur Kone also emphasised the importance of the role of the African Computer Institute in the formation of computer centres in Africa. Delegates from the Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad, Niger, Benin, Togo and Mauritius were joined by observers from Mali and France during the conference, as well as representatives of international organisations, including the European Economic Community.
