Background: Mrs. Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, arrived in Cairo on Monday (26 October) where she spent eight hours conferring with the new President of the UAR, Anwar Sadat, and visiting the tomb of the late President Nasser.
Mrs. Gandhi was returning home to India after attending the special United Nations general assembly session in New York to mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the charter.
President Sadat accompanied Mrs. Gandhi to the tomb of the late President Nasser, and a wreath was laid. Later, Mrs. Gandhi met the widow of President Nasser and personally conveyed her grief at his death.
Discussions were then held at the Tahra Palace in Cairo on the Middle East situation and the relations of India and the United Arab Republic. Mrs. Gandhi has now returned to India.
