  • Description

Cuban Militia units, many armed with rifles, paraded March 13th into the Christopher Columbus Cemetery, Havana, to honour students killed in the 1957 revolution.

This was part of a day-long rally staged by Premier Fidel Castro which rapidly assumed anti-American overtones with the arrest of three Americans. It was a rally to commemorate the third anniversary of the students attack on the palace of Fulgencion Batista - the students reached the outer door of Batista's office before they were quelled. Thirty four persons were killed, including some innocent bystanders. Batista was unharmed.

Later in the day President Dorticos told a cheering crowd of 2,000 in the plaza outside his palace that the country was determined to free its economy from "foreign domination". He praised the students who died trying to kill Batista as "martyrs to the cause of complete political freedom".
