In Havana, Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O) leader, Yasser Arafat, has called for the suspension or the expulsion of Egypt from the Non-Aligned Movement. Addressing delegates at the sixth Non-Aligned summit, Mr. Arafat called on them to isolate the partner of the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty. Mr. Arafat's speech on the second day of the Summit (5 September) coincided with the start of an official visit by Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, to Israel.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Yasser Arafat wearing his traditional white checkered keffieh and khaki battledress told delegates that the time had come for all those who stand by Israel and support it to receive the punishment they deserve. He described the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty as a plot against the Arab nation under written by the United states, and maintained that by signing the treaty, Egypt had violated Arab unanimity and the resolutions adopted by the Non-Aligned Movement.
In a long speech which drew warm applause, Yasser arafat also bitterly attacked the United States for denying the Palestinians their inalienable rights. Arab delegates are expected to propose a resolution calling for Egypt's suspension, but conference sources believe it has little chance of being accepted, since Yugoslavia and many other members have argued that Egypt has not violated any of the Movement's principles.
At a cocktail party on Tuesday night (4 September) Cuba's Fidel Castro was able to have private talks with many delegates, including Heng Samrin, the controversial government leader of the Vietnamese-backed Kampuchean (Cambodian) and United Nations Secretary General, Kurt Waldheim.
Nicaragua's Sandinista leader, Humberto Ortega received a particularly warm welcome. Cuba gave considerable aid to the Sandinistas during their struggle to overthrow President Anastasio Somoza and is now helping the new government to rebuild the country's economy. Cuban chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement has heightened Latin American interest in the organisation.
