    ON THE FIRST DAY OF HIS FOUR-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE CAPITAL OF THE IVORY COAST, PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA CARRIED OUT A FULL PROGRAMME OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENTS, VISITED A CAR ASSEMBLY PLANT AND HELD PRIVATE TALKS WITH PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY.

    PRESIDENT KAUNDA REPEATEDLY EXPRESSED HIS SYMPATHY WITH THE PLIGHT OF THE BREAKAWAY NIGERIAN REGION OF BIAFRA, AND RESIDENTS OF ABIDJAN WHO STEM FROM THAT PROVINCE WERE ALLOWED TO HOLD THEIR FIRST PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION. A GROUP OF MEN AND WOMEN, BEHAVING VERY QUIETLY, GAVE THE "V FOR VICTORY" SIGN AND HELD UP A POSTER WITH A PICTURE OF OJUKWU AND PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY. (ZAMBIA RECOGNISES BIAFRA).

    AT A TOWN HALL CEREMONY, THE VISITING PRESIDENT WAS MADE AN HONORARY CITIZEN OF ABIDJAN. HE GAVE A SPEECH CALLING FOR MORE CONTACTS BETWEEN THE ORDINARY CITIZENS OF HIS COUNTRY AND THOSE OF THE IVORY COAST.

    HIS NEXT ENGAGEMENT WAS A VISIT TO A CAR ASSEMBLY PLANT -- A RENAULT SUBSIDIARY PRODUCING 2,100 VEHICLES A YEAR IN ABIDJAN. PRODUCTION RANGES FROM SMALL PASSENGER CARS TO LIGHT TRUCKS.

    THE DAY ENDED WITH DINNER AND AN OFFICIAL RECEPTION AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE. THIS OCCASION AFFORDED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PRIVATE TALKS BETWEEN THE TWO PRESIDENTS.
