  • Description

COMMONWEALTH TRADE MINISTERS TODAY (THURSDAY) BEGAN A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE AT MARLDOROUGH HOUSE, IN LONDON, TO DISCUSS KEY ISSUES COMING UP AT THE MAMMOTH UNITED NATIONS TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE OPENING IN GENEVA NEXT MONDAY (23RD MARCH).

THE COMMONWEALTH REPRESENTATIVES ARE TO BE ASKED FOR THEIR VIEWS ON THE POSSIBLE ENDING OF COMMONWEALTH PREFERENCES IN FAVOUR OF WIDER SYSTEM OF PREFERENCES EXPECTED TO BE PROPOSED IN GENEVA. BRITAIN IS WILLING TO TAKE PART IN A WIDE-RANGING SYSTEM OF TRADE PREFERENCES GRANTED BY INDUSTRIAL NATIONS TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES - BUT ONLY IF THE COMMONWEALTH AGREES, AND JOINT ACTION IS TAKEN BY ALL MAJOR INDUSTRIAL NATIONS. THIS IS IN LINE WITH THE VIEW THAT THE BEST WAY TO HELP DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IS TO REMOVE TRADE BARRIERS.

(BRITISH OFFICIALS ARE OPTIMISTIC OF GAINING AGREEMENT AT THIS COMMONWEALTH CONFERENCE, OUT THEY DO NOT EXPECT A UNITED FRONT TO APPEAR AT THE FULL 122-NATION UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE. ABOUT 1,700 DELEGATES ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE GENEVA CONFERENCE WHICH WILL LAST UNTIL 15TH JUNE.
