    ABOUT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND SPECTATORS TURNED UP TO SEE FIVE WORLD CHAMPIONS AMONG THE 23 COMPETITORS FROM NINE COUNTRIES WHO COMPETED IN THE 50 CC TO 350 CC EVENTS.

    THE BATTLE OF THE COURAGE AND MACHINES THRILLED THE SPECTATORS. ALTHOUGH THE EVENTS HAD NO BEARING ON THE WORLD TITLES AS ALL THESE HAD ALREADY BEEN DECIDED, IT WAS A DAY TO REMEMBER.

    THE 20-LAP EVENT FOR 125 CC MACHINES WAS THE MOST ACTION-PACKED OF THEM ALL. WEST GERMANY'S ERNEST DEGNER ASTRIDE A SUZUKI (No. 3) FINISHED MORE THAN 500 METRES IN FRONT OF THE 125 CC CHAMPION, LUIGI TAVERI OF SWITZERLAND, ON A HONDA (No. 6) THIRD WAS YOSHIMI KATAYAMA OF JAPAN, ALSO RIDING A SUZUKI (No. 8).

    EARLIER, NEW ZEALAND'S HUGH ANDERSON, RIDING A SUZUKI, (No. 30) AND ERNEST DEGNER HAD AN EXCITING BATTLE. THE LATTER FINALLY COMING FROM BEHIND TO OVERTAKE THE NEW ZEALANDER WHO HAD DEVELOPED ENGINE TROUBLE ON THE 14TH LAP.

    ERNEST DEGNER'S TIME WAS 52 MINUTES 33.5 SECONDS WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 85.18 M.P.H. AT THE END OF THE RACE, HE WAS DRIVEN ROUND THE CIRCUIT IN A CAR TO ENTHUSIASTIC APPLAUSE.
