    IN SPAIN, WHILE OPERATION 'STEEL PIKE' CONTINUES, AMERICAN MARINES TAKING PART YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) DEMONSTRATED THE USE OF A PORTABLE METAL AIR STRIP.

    THE OPERATION - THE BIGGEST OF ITS KIND IN EUROPE SINCE WORLD WAR TWO - IS BEING HELD NEAR HUELVA ON THE SOUTHWEST COAT. THE AIR STRIP WAS BUILT IN LESS THAN 100 HOURS. IT HAS BEEN SET DOWN LIKE A CARPET ON A COASTAL PLAIN SOUTH OF ALMERIA TO PROVIDE AN AIR BASE SOME 200 MILES (321 KMS) FROM THE INVASION BEACHES AT HUELVA.

    THE RUNWAY IS MADE OF THIN ALUMINUM PANELS WHICH INTERLOCK TO FORM A BASE CAPABLE OF BEARING CARGO PLANES WEIGHING UP TO 75 TONS.

    AN AIR DISPLAY WAS STAGED FOR 200 NEWSMEN COVERING THE EXERCISE AS WELL AS FOR AMERICAN, WEST GERMAN AND SPANISH OFFICERS. FAT F8 AND F4 AIRCRAFT TOOK PART TO DEMONSTRATE THE LATEST ARRESTOR WIRES USED FOR SHORT LANDINGS. THIS EQUIPMENT IS SIMILAR TO THAT USED ON AIRCRAFT CARRIERS.

    SOME AMERICAN METAL STRIPS HAVE CATAPULTS FOR RAPID TAKE-OFF BUT THE AIRCRAFT WITH HEAVY LOADS HERE USED ROCKET BOTTLES ATTACHED TO THEIR SIDES.
