    CABINET MINISTERS AND LEADING WHITE PERSONALITIES WERE AMONG THE CROWD OF SOME 2,000 WHO STOOD IN SILENCE IN THE CAPITAL'S CECIL SQUARE AS "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN" ECHOED THROUGH THE CITY CENTRE IN WARM SUNSHINE.

    THE UNION JACK FLUTTERED ABOVE THE MONUMENT WHICH MARKS THE SPOT WHERE THE ORIGINAL PIONEERS FIRST RAISED THE UNION JACK IN 1890.

    MR. SMITH WAS AMONG THOSE WHO LAID A WREATH IN MEMORY OF THE PIONEERS, BUT THERE WAS NO OFFICIAL WREATH FROM THE BRITISH MISSION IN SALISBURY.
