  • Description

DURING A BRIEF STOP-OVER AT ACCRA AIRPORT LAST SATURDAY (15 FEBRUARY), SIERRA LEONE'S FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. L.A. BREWAH, TOLD REPORTERS THAT GHANAIANS HAD A PLACE IN HIS COUNTRY JUST AS SIERRA LEONEANS HAD A PLACE IN GHANA.

MR. BREWAH -- WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY TWO OFFICIALS OF SIERRA LEONE'S FOREIGN MINISTRY -- WAS RECEIVED AT THE AIRPORT BY MR. OWUSU-ANSAH, THE PRINCIPAL SECRETARY RESPONSIBLE FOR ECONOMIC RELATIONS AT THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, AND BY THE ACTING SIERRA LEONE HIGH COMMISSIONER IN GHANA.

MR. BREWAH WAS ON HIS WAY TO A COUNCIL OF MINISTERS' MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY IN ADDIS ABABA.

IN HIS STATEMENT TO REPORTERS, HE CLAIMED THAT HIS GOVERNMENT HAD NEVER RESTRICTED GHANAIANS IN SIERRA LEONE. HE DENIED THAT THE RECENT EXPULSION OF GHANAIAN FISHERMEN FROM SIERRA LEONE WAS MOTIVATED BY THE REFUSAL OF THE GHANA GOVERNMENT TO EXTRADITE MAJOR JUMU, MEMBER OF A FORMER SIERRA LEONE GOVERNMENT.

(A FURTHER III DEPENDENTS OF GHANAIAN FISHERMEN, EXPELLED FROM SIERRA LEONE, RETURNED TO ACCRA ON THE SAME DAY (SATURDAY) AFTER SIERRA LEONE'S PREMIER HAS SPOKEN OF A THREAT TO THE SECURITY OF HIS COUNTRY).
