This is the Baikonur (pronounced "BY-KO-NOOR") Cosmodrome... ... This is where Soviet spaceships and cosmic automatic stations are launched, either to orbits around our Mother Earth, or other planets.....
It was also here that the space are was ushered in by the Soviet Sputnik, the first in the world, and by the Soviet man in space, also the first in the world...
Today is April 23rd, 1971...
Night has fallen... The "Soyuz -10" spacecraft is ready for launching from the Cosmodrome. Its crew will be Colonel Vladimir Shatalov, the Commander of the craft; Candidate of Technical Science Alexei Yeliseyev, engineer; and Nikolai Roukavishnikov, test-engineer. (The names pronounced: VLA-'DEE-MIR SHA-'TAN-LOV? ALEC "SEY YEH-LEE-'SEN-YEV; NIKO-'LYE ROO-KAN-'VEESH-NIK-OV)
A press-conference was arranged on the eve of the launching for Soviet newspaper, radio and TV reporters
Vladimir Shatalov, the pilot, went on his first space journey in January, 1969, in "Soyuz -4" spaceship. Together with the crew of the "Soyuz-5", also in space at that moment, he carried out the operations on docking the spacecraft, with the result of setting up the first experimental space station in mankind's history. His second flight took place in October, 1969, and then Vladimir Shatalov was Commander of a whole group of spacecraft - "Soyuz-6", "Soyuz-7", and "Soyuz-8" Vladimir Shatalov is 43. He is married, and has a son and a daughter.
The first space flight of craft engineer Alexei Yeliseyev was in January, 1969, he was then a member of the crew of the "Soyuz-5" spaceship. While in flight, Alexei Yeliseyev walked over from the "Soyuz-5" into the "Soyuz-4". October, 1969, was the month of Yeliseyev's second space flight, when he took part in the group space journey of the "Soyuz-6", "Soyuz-7" and "Soyuz-8 craft. Alexei Yeliseyev is 36 years old, married, and has a 10-year daughter Yelena.
The third member of the crew of the "Soyuz-10" is test engineer Nikolai Roukavishnikov. This is his first space flight. He is 38 years old. Back in 1957 he graduated from the Moscow Engineering and Physics Institute. He joined the group of astronauts in January, 1967. He is married, and has a 5-year son Vladimir.
All the members of the spaceship's crew are Communists -- Vladimir Shatalov, Alexei Yeliseyev, and Nikolai Roukavishnikov.
...At two hours 54 minutes the rocket-carrier with the "Soyuz-10" spaceship was launched...
...At three hours zero three minutes the "Soyuz-10" craft was on the pre-calculated orbit of an artificial Earth satellite.
The "Soyuz-10" spaceship crew are to achieve the following while in flight:
-joint experiments with the orbital scientific station "Salyut", launched on April 19th, 1971;
-overall testing of improved systems aboard the spaceship;
-further improvement of the manual and automatic systems of piloting, orienting and stabilizing the craft under various flight regimens;
-medico-biological research to determine the influence of the cosmic flight factors on human organism.
Commander of the spacecraft Vladimir Shatalov, while aboard the "Soyuz-10", has sent a message which says that the crew voice their gratitude for the confidence and stated that the astronauts will fulfil the task set before them by the Communist Party, Government and people of their Motherland.
Stable radio and TV communication is maintained with the crew of the "Soyuz-10". The systems aboard the craft have been and are functioning normally. The cosmonauts feel well. In the living compartments conditions are close to hose on the Earth.
Astronauts Shatalov, Yeliseyev and Roukavishnikov have started fulfilling the flight programme.
