Background: The Orthodox Bishop of Baghdad, Seurios Zaka Iwass, was installed Patriarch of Antioch and the Whole Orient on Sunday (14 September). The Iraqi bishop succeeds Patriarch Agnatius Vacoub III, who died last June.
SYNOPSIS: Seurios Zaka Iwass received the respect of 25 Syrian Orthodox bishops and the symbols of his high office in Damascus Cathedral on Sunday (14 September). The 4 7-year-old Iraqi-born bishop was elected unanimously by the 18 members of the community's Holy Synod. As Patriarch of Antioch and the Whole Orient, Seurios Zaka Iwass heads what is believed to be the oldest Christian church in the world. His predecessor, Patriarch Agnatius Vacoub III, died of a heart attack in Syria last June. He was 67 years old.
Both the Syrian and Lebanese Presidents send representatives to Sunday's (14 September) installation ceremony. President Hafez Al-Assad was represented by his minister of state for presidential affairs, while Lebanese President, Elias Sarkis, sent his minister for post and telecommunications. Members of the diplomatic corps and church officials were also present at the ceremony.
