SYNOPSIS: Fishermen and freak weather conditions are causing havoc among the thousands of pelicans that live in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Peru. An unusual invasion of warm water has driven anchovies, which the pelican feeds on, far to the north. The Peruvian fishing industry's dramatic growth has also cut into the pelicans food supply.
Recently pelicans have been forced inland in their search for food...some as far as the centre of Lima, the Peruvian capital.
In recent weeks, the pelicans have become frequenters of the largest market in Lima. They come here following the fish, which they can no longer find in their feeding grounds...The pelican is a large, powerful bird that is aggressive and confident when confronted with people and automobiles.
The pelicans' hunger has put them in a condition where they will accept or steal any food...even meat. Some of the birds have been found dead after eating garbage.
Other birds have been killed by automobiles when they have tried to fly across a crowded street, or merely walked blindly down the middle of the road. Experts are unable to say when the unusual weather conditions will ease, so the pelicans will be able to find sufficient food in the ocean...Until then it is expected that hundreds of birds will die from poisoning and starvation.
