  • Description

Ghana moslems joined the rest of the moslem world on Monday (6 October) to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr -- prayers and festivities marking the end of Ramadan, the islamic month of fasting.

This year, Eid-ul-Fitr was officially observed at Independence Square in Accra, with the Chief Imam of Ghana, Alhaji Muktar Abass leading Moslems from the Greater Accra Region in prayers.

In the congregation were Moslems from every walk of life, including the Commissioner for Trade and Tourism, the Commissioner responsible for Moslem Affairs, Moslem Chiefs and diplomats from Moslem countries.

At the Independence Square ceremony, the Chief Imam read a message from Colonel I.K. Acheampong, Head of State and Chairman of the National Redemption Council.

The Head of State told the people that the real solutions to Ghana's problems lie in hard work, avoidance of extravagance and a true reliance on the country's natural and human resources. He expressed confidence that with God's help and the co-operation of all Ghanaians "we shall succeed".
