SYNOPSIS: Thousand of anti-Apartheid demonstrators were at today's rugby union match between South Africa and New South Wales in Sydney. Throughout the game they kept up a steady, deafening chant. It was the noisiest ant-apartheid demonstration of the South Africans tour. But the police were well prepared for today's match.

Smoke bombs and flares were fired over the heads of police and twice demonstrators broke onto the field during the match which the Springbok's won 35 to 3.

At least 120 people were arrested, most of them anti-apartheid demonstrators, but a number of rugby supporters were also marched away by police when fights broke out between the two factions. Throughout the match smoke bombs, glass, fireworks, fruit and golf balls rained on to the field. Two policemen were injured, one of them requiring hospital treatment for a gashed head caused by a brick
But the demonstrators failed in their main intention--to stop the match by swarming onto the field. More than 20 minutes after the game ended groups of demonstrators refused to leave the ground despite appeals by police. Police made further arrest and the demonstrators finally drifted away.
