In Argentina, the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the 23rd World Chess Olympiad, Mr. Rodolfo Zanlugo, is still missing after his disappearance on October 18th. The police are presuming he was kidnapped. The Argentine Chess Federation have appointed an interim chairman and say the opening in Buenos Aires of the 18-day Olympiad will not be affected by Mr. Zanlugo's disappearance.
SYNOPSIS: Seventy countries were expected to participate in the event, which was due to begin on October 25th.
Mr. Zanlugo's wife reported him missing on October 20th. She said her husband had been advised anonymously to cancel the Chess Olympiad, or suffer the consequences.
Mr. Zanlugo left his offices after midnight but never arrived at his car, which was found abandoned in the car park, where he had left it.
Some six hundred and fifty competitors will take part in the matches, which will be played in part of the Riven Plate Stadium, used during the World Football Cup earlier in the year.
Police say the affair is a complete mystery. They have no idea why Mr. Zanlugo should have been kidnapped.
