  • Description

President Nicolae Ceausescu or Romania joined President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the fall of Bataan at the Mount Samat Memorial in the Philippines on Thursday (10 April).

President Ceausescu was on a four-day state visit to the Philippines accompanied by his wife, Dr. Elena Ceausescu.

The fall of Bataan is commemorated in the Philippines as a symbol of national heroism. It happened on 9 April 1942, after the Filipino army had defended the province against the 14th Imperial Japanese Army for nearly 120 days.

President Ceausescu laid a wreath at the Mount Samat Memorial, after inspecting a guard of honour with President Macros. The United States Ambassador to the Philippines, William Sullivan, was also present.

President Ceausescu is the first eastern European communist Head of State to visit the Philippines. During his stay he explored with President Macros areas where the economics of their two countries could complement each other.
