  • Description

4,500 exhibitors from 42 countries are displaying their goods at the Hanover Fair, West Germany's most prestigious exhibition, which opened last Wednesday (28 April).

A fire escape chute that people can drop down from considerable heights without hurting themselves is one of the most interesting of the new exhibits. It is the idea of a German firm based in Essen.

Other new German inventions are a computer which reveals details only when a special key card is inserted and -- among heavier machinery -- a mechanical digger which is able to collect earth at sideways angles. Hand sized television tubes are also on display.

Over the next few months office computers are likely to be available in Europe at cheaper price for small companies. The Hanover Fair shows that Europe seems to be catching up quickly with advanced United States technology in the field of office equipment.

When the fair opened on Wednesday (28 April) Dr. Hans Friderichs, the West German Economics Minister said the government was leaning heavily on the country's industry to hold down prices. He twice appealed to companies at the exhibition not to raise prices.

The exhibition closes on May 6.
