  • Description

The first group of Nigerian Air Force cadet pilots trained in Nigeria graduated at the Training, Kaduna on Saturday (June 13) in the presence of Colonel E.E. Ikwue, Chief of Air Staff of the N.A.F. who took the salute.

About 100 people watched the nine graduates receive their wings after completion of a year-long, 150 hour flying training programme aimed to increase Nigeria's total number of pilots, soon to be boosted by the return to the fold of some former members of the secessionist Biafran Air Force.

Since its inception eight years ago, the NAF has had to send its cadets aboard for training; this year's class are the first to be trained on home ground, "a great landmark", said Colonel Ikwue in his address after the march past and inspection of graduates.

The cadets will now go to the N.A.F. base at Kano, 150 miles northeast of Kaduna, for advanced training on the MIG-17 jets given to Nigeria by Russia soon after the start of the Civil War in 1967.
