Background: King Paul of Greece, accompanied by his son, Crown Prince Constantine, attended the oath-taking ceremony of 2,000 naval recruits at Scaramanga Naval Base near Athens, May 12.
After a short period of training at the base, the new recruits will be assigned to four destroyers and a tanker supply ship recently transferred from the United States Navy.
The naval units arrived in Greek waters February 13 under terms of a mutual assistance programme with the United States.
It has been reported recently that pre-fabricated submarines - set from Russia to Albania for assembly - were now operating from Sassona Island, Albania. They are said to be charting Ionian Archipelago and eastern Mediterranean water for "under water bases" that could be used in event of war.
