    Marawan Ghazawy, of the United Arab Republic, won the fourth international Nile Swimming Marathon early today (Sunday). Ghazawy, a professional, finished ahead of Egyptian amateur Mohieddin Wahid Farid, with another Egyptian professional, Hani Hemat taking third place.

    The race, over 35 kilometres (21.7 miles), started from El Yakhet Club at Maadi. Competitors from 11 nations took part, and over 20,000 spectators watched the finish.

    First foreign entrant to finish was Dutch swimmer Jogan Schans, who was tenth overall and sixth in the professional class. The first woman home was an Egyptian amateur, Shar Mansour, who finished eighth overall.

    SYNOPSIS: At a sailing club on the River Nile, Egyptian swimmers and competitors from ten foreign countries gathered early on Sunday for the fourth international Nile Swimming Marathon, over a 22-mile (35 km.) stretch of the river.

    First away were the women amateurs, Followed after a short handicap delay by the amateur men competitors.

    Another pause, and then the professionals of both sexes started the long swim.

    England's professional Geoff Lake took 15th place, ahead of Italy's Lucio and Vincenzi.

    Egyptian swimmers of both sexes soon began to dominate the race with foreigners like lone American Thomas Hitzel well down the filed.

    As the swimmers and the flotilla of support boats approached the finishing line, it was clear the Egyptians would take all the honours.

    First across the line was Egyptian professional Marawan Ghazawy. An Egyptian amateur was second, with another Egyptian professional third. First woman home was Egyptian amateur Shar Mansour, in eighth place. For the 10,000 spectators, it was clearly a good result.
