  • Description

THE WORLD'S SECOND HEART TRANSPLANT PATIENT, DR. PHILIP BLAIBERG, SHOWED OBVIOUS SIGNS TO CONTINUING EXCELLENT HEALTH WHEN HE DROVE FOR A ROUTINE MEDICAL CHECK-UP TO THE GROOTE SCHUUR HOSPITAL IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, ON MONDAY (13 MAY).

DR. BLAIBERG'S NEW HEART, RECEIVED FOUR MONTHS AGO, IS REPORTED TO BE FUNCTIONING PERFECTLY. HE IS, HOWEVER, THE ONLY ONE OF THE FIRST SEVEN HEART TRANSPLANT PATIENTS TO HAVE SURVIVED THE OPERATION. HIS DOCTOR, PROFESSOR CHRISTIAN BARNARD, IS CURRENTLY ON A TOUR OF EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES. ON MAY 3RD, HE RECEIVED THE FREEDOM OF CAPE TOWN AS A TRIBUTE TO HIS COURAGE IN PIONEERING HEART TRANSPLANTS.

EVEN CERTAIN MEMBERS OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION IN THE AS YET DUBIOUS SOVIET UNION HAVE RECOGNIZED PROFESSOR BARNARD'S ACHIEVEMENT. DR. BLAIBERG REPORTS THAT A MOSCOW HEART CLINIC HAS ASKED FOR A DISPLAY COPY OF HIS SIGNATURE, TO ENCOURAGE SOVIET SURGEONS DOING RESEARCH INTO HEART TRANSPLANTATION.
