    Eight Australian Mirage fighters arrived in Singapore on Monday to take up station under the terms of the five power defence agreements which came into effect last November. Malaysia, Singapore, Britain, Australia and New Zealand are co-signers of the agreement. Under its terms the 1,400 mile and hour jets with operate from Tengah Airfield on detachment from the two Australian Mirage Squadrons at Butterworth in northwest Malaysia. The Mirages form part of the integrated air defence system for Malaysia and Singapore. The eight Mirages made low formation passes over the airbase before landing. The Australian contingent was led by Commander Peter Scully. The five power defence agreement was formulated in the wake of the withdrawal of British forces from the region. Under its terms Australia and New Zealand take on a greater role in the defence of the region with British help.
