Background: A gunman freed a married couple he had seized as hostages after exchanging gunfire with police in Holland on Saturday (16 February).
The gunman, who is 40, seized the couple in their flat in Hilversum, about 18 miles (30 kms) from Amsterdam. He forced them to drive away with him in a red car.
Police trailed the car to Amsterdam, where the gunman got out and told the couple to drive away. He disappeared into a crowd of shoppers.
Police exchanged shots with the man when they tried to question him about a car theft, and the theft of stolen property.
