  • Description

Near the end of his week-long visit to the People's Republic of China, Emperor Hails Selassie of Ethiopia was conducted on a tour of a hospital in Canton. While at the hospital, two cases were admitted for emergency surgery, and the Emperor was invited to view the operations -- to be carried out under acopuntural anaesthesia.

Acupuncture, while it has been practiced in China for 2,000 years, has been sophisticated to such an extent that in reality it is a new technique. Slender needles are inserted under the patient's skin. The choice of placement is determined by the area of the body needing surgery.

Following application of the needles, patients feel no pain, but are fully conscious during the surgery. In one of the operations viewed by Emperor Selassie, the patient waved to the spectators, talked with his doctors, and drank a cup of tea -- all while surgeons were busy removing a large stone from one of his kidneys.

SYNOPSIS: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, near the end of his week-long stay in the People's Republic of China, visited the city of Canton. While there, he was invited to tour a hospital, which was established in 1835. He was warmly greeted by the hospital staff.

While at the hospital, two cases were admitted for emergency surgery, and the Emperor was invited to watch the operation - to be carried out under the newly sophisticated technique of acupunctural anaesthesia. Slender metal needles are inserted into the skin, numbing the area of the body in which the operation is to take place.

Fully conscious while the operation takes place, one of the patients waved to the spectators, talked to the doctors, and ate an apple -- all while the surgeons removed a large stone from one of his kidneys.
