    Background: KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT

Kuwait's Foreign Minister pledged at a Press conference on June 18 that his country would use Stinger missiles for defence purposes only, and not in aggression against Israel. Sheikh Sabah al Ahmed al Sabah said that Kuwait had requested the missiles from the United States following the delivery of 400 missiles to Saudi Arabia. He also revealed that Kuwait had been receiving information from Saudi Arabia supplied by US Advance Warning and Control (AWAC) aircraft that monitor air and sea activities in the Gulf. Despite Kuwait's vulnerable position near the Iran-Iraq war front many US Congressmen oppose the delivery of missiles for fear that they may be used against Israel or fall into the hands of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), which Kuwait has long supported. The Sheikh said that he hoped there would be no obstacles to the missiles' delivery by Congress. In a conference dealing with a wide range of subjects, the Foreign Minister also turned down an offer by Jordan's King Hussein to send in troops to protect Gulf countries during the present crisis.
