  • Description

FORTY EIGHT FISHERMEN FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA WERE SENT HOME ON MONDAY (9 JANUARY) BY THE UNITED STATES AUTHORITIES. THE FISHERMEN WERE RESCUED BY AN AMERICAN DESTROYER ON DECEMBER 3, DURING A STORM IN THE GULF OF TONKIN.

FORTY FOUR OF THE MEN HAD BEEN ABOARD A LARGE FISHING JUNK. THE OTHERS WERE RESCUED FROM TWO SMALLER JUNKS WHICH SANK. THE MEN WERE BROUGHT TO A BASE IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN WARSAW THEN NOTIFIED THE CHINESE EMBASSY IN WARSAW OF THE RESCUE. ARRANGEMENTS TO RETURN THE MEN TO THEIR HOMELAND WERE CARRIED OUT BY THE RED CROSS SOCIETY OF CHINA, THE AMERICAN RED CROSS AND BY BRITISH AUTHORITIES IN HONG KONG.

THE MEN WERE PUT ABOARD A U.S. AIR FORCE AIRCRAFT IN NHA TRANG AND FLOWN TO HONG KONG. THEY WERE IN HONG KONG, BRITISH AUTHORITIES CONVEYED THEM TO THE BORDER. IN INTERVIEWS BEFORE LEAVING VIETNAM, THE FISHERMEN SAID THEY HAD BEEN WELL TREATED, BUT REGRETTED THAT THEY HAD TO LEAVE THEIR JUNK BEHIND. AN AMERICAN RED CROSS SPOKESMAN SAID THAT EFFORTS TO RETURN THE JUNK WERE ABANDONED BECAUSE OF STORMS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. THE JUNK -- WITH A DECK-LOAD OF FISHING DORIES -- REMAINED AT ANCHOR NEAR NHA TRANG.
