  • Description

Hundreds of thousands of people turned out recently in a massive demonstration aimed at preventing the construction of a new nuclear power station in Spain.

SYNOPSIS: The Spanish government's plans to construct a new nuclear based power plant near the town of Lemoniz has run into the face of massive protests. The town of Lemoniz is twelve miles (20 kms) north of Bilbao.

The latest protest attracted a crowd of more than 200,000 who marched from Bilbao to Lemoniz. The organisers of the protest said it was the largest anti-nuclear demonstration ever held.

The size of the protest caused the authorities to call our reinforcements for the police who were handling the march. Police from nearby districts were rushed to Bilbao where they backed up local military and police units. The huge turnout of demonstrators was also due to the fact that the protest was aimed at preventing the construction of another power plant in the Navarre province town of Tudela. The demonstrators carried banners depicting the dangers of nuclear fallout.

The spanish demonstration coincides with similar anti-nuclear protests in countries through out the western world.

Speakers at the demonstration rally called for a halt to the building of the nuclear plant at Bilbao and the refusal of government authorization to build another plant at Tudela.
