  • Description

David "Poison" Kotei of Ghana retained his world boxing council featherweight title when he stopped Japan's Harigu Uehara in 12 rounds at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra, Ghana on Saturday (6 March).

Kotei 25, dominated the fight throughout and British referee, Harry Gibbs, stepped in after one minute 15 seconds of the 12th round when the Japanese challenger was unable to defend himself after taking a barrage of blows.

The champion steadily built up a points lead with a variety of punches to head and body. He battered Uehara with straight punches and launched punishing two fisted attacks.

At the start of the 12th the referee called a doctor to Uehara's corner to examine damage to the challenger's right eye. He was allowed to continue but the fight was soon over as Kotei produced his decisive assault in which he attacked his quarry with blows from all angles.

As the fight ended the capacity crowd went wild with joy at the local boy's victory and celebrations in Accra went on early into Sunday (7 March) morning.

It was the first defence by the Ghanian of the title which he won from Mexico's Ruben Olivares in the United States last September.
