  • Description

THE VERDICT IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN TREASON TRIAL SET OF A CHAIN OF PROTESTS IN LONDON TODAY (THURSDAY). WAVING PLACARDS, SMALL GROUPS OF PEOPLE GATHERED OUTSIDE THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY TO DEMONSTRATE AGAINST THE PRETORIA TRIAL.

DEMONSTRATORS INCLUDED MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH COMMUNIST PARTY, THE ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT, AND A DEPUTATION FROM LONDON UNIVERSITY, WHERE Nelson MANDELA - ONE OF THE EIGHT DEFENDANT'S IN THE TREASON TRIAL - IS HONOURARY PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT'S UNION.

TONIGHT, THEY WERE JOINED BY A SMALL GROUP OF MEMBERS OF THE PARLIAMENTARY OPPOSITION, WHO MARCHED FROM THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT TO THE EMBASSY WITH A PROTEST PETITION. THEY PUSHED THE PETITION THROUGH A SIDE DOOR OF THE BUILDING, WHICH HAD BEEN LOCKED UP FOR THE NIGHT.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE COMMUNIST PARTY SAID A LETTER THEY TRIED TO DELIVER TO THE EMBASSY WAS "THROWN BACK INTO OUR FACES." WHEN THE STUDENTS ARRIVED TO DELIVER A PROTEST PETITION, THE GATES WERE CLOSED.

MEANWHILE, THE THREE CLOSE RELATIVE OF THE ACCUSED IN THE TRIAL PLAN TO CONTINUE A SILENT VIGIL OUTSIDE THE EMBASSY TOMORROW AND SATURDAY.

(MANDELA, THE FORMER LEADER OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS AND THE MAN KNOWN AS THE "BLACK PIMPERNEL," AND SEVEN OTHER WERE FOUND GUILTY OF SABOTAGE. THEY WILL BE SENTENCED TOMORROW. THE PROSECUTION SAID MANDELA WAS AT THE CENTRE OF A PLAN TO INVADE SOUTH AFRICA).
